In 1956, the Reverend Donald Docken (who was then the paster of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church at Holme Avenue and Stamford Street in Philadelphia) saw the need for a Church in the Far Northeast. The community was growing rapidly with new housing developments and a steady stream of people coming into the area.

Pastor Docken consulted with the Home Missions Department of our Church, who after a survey of our area recognized the need for a sister congregation for Trinity ELC.

After careful survey of the area, our present site was selected. In 1957, the Home Missions Department negotiated the purchase of two acres of land for $24,000. It was decided at the time that the educational buildings were of prime importance, with the larger building being suitable for services. In 1958, the ground was broken and construction begun on our Church by Creative Builders, Inc. Construction proceeded despite some labor and material problems.

On October 4, 1959, the first service was held at Faith. 186 persons were present and 52 families with a total of 170 signing on as charter members. On the following Sunday, October 11, 1959, the first Church school was held with 13 teachers and 70 children attending even though the Church was not quite complete. The builders finished their work in November 1959.

The newly forming congregation banded together and this new facility became alive with hopes and goals and love. Sunday, March 6, 1960 was the official "birthday" of Faith Lutheran Church with Dr. M. Austinson officiating the dedication. That same day, the first meeting of the congregation was held during which an excellent scripture verse became part of the cornerstone of Faith:

"Behold, I have set before you an open door which no one shall shut."

Faith continued to move forward organizing committees and activities designed to allow the entire congregation to engage more actively in the Church's work.

On March 6, 2000, we celebrated our 40th Anniversary with a gala celebration. The works of our congregation and committees continues today. There are many ways for you as a new member to join us as we all endeavor to serve our Lord, Jesus Christ. Please consider joining at least one of our committees and/or activities. The rewards of serving our Lord are, quite literally, endless!
