Society of St. Vincent DePaul Clothing Drive

Do you have great stuff in your closet that just doesn't fit any more? Is it too old to wear but too good to throw out? Have the kids or grandkids outgrown their wardrobe? Don't waste those gently used clothing treasures, donate them to the needy.

Once again the Society of St. Vincent DePaul will be holding the annual clothing drive at Faith Lutheran on Thursday, August 28, 2008 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. During those hours, a truck will be in our parking lot to receive men's and women's clothing, children's clothes, linens, small household appliances, and other household items. If you wish to donate large working appliances, you can call the Society for a pick-up at 215-288-9540.

Please remember to clean out your closets, attics, garages, etc. and know that your used items will be put to work for the needy.

Isaiah: Visions of Promise

Our world seems to be going crazy! Gas and food prices are out of control, violence seems to be everywhere, and we have serious questions about our national leadership. Where is God in the midst of all of this?

The Bible shows us that, although things have always been chaotic, God is always present with us to bring us a message of hope and a word of peace and good counsel. The Hebrew Scriptures book of the prophet Isaiah is full of God's ancient wisdom and words of strong promise for God's people. If you'd like to learn more about the Hebrew Scriptures, join the Adult Sunday School class for a nineteen week adventure into the book of Isaiah beginning Sunday, September 8, 2008.

Our journey into the writings that make up this fascinating and important book is courtesy of the Lutheran Bible Ministries series Isaiah: Visions of Promise. This program involves video presentations and lots of good group discussion. There are no books to purchase, no mandatory enrollments, and no experience necessary. If you've never attended a Bible discussion group before, this is the group for you!

Isaiah: Visions of Promise deals with real-life issues in the lives of modern Christians. Some of the topics include: how to become a peacemaker, how to make personal witness, how to bring hope to others, and how to address injustice. If you want to learn more about one of the most important books in the Bible that Jesus read-the Hebrew Scriptures-come join us on September 8 during the 9:30 Learning Hour in the Fellowship Room. (Coffee and treats are provided, of course!) Don't worry if you can't attend all of the sessions. Each session is complete in itself.

Pastor Owen will lead the discussion group with the able assistance of "video professors" Pastor Jane O'Hara Shields, Mission Director for the ELCA New England Synod, and Pastor Eric Shafer of Trinity Lutheran, Lansdale. The video segments are full of beautiful art and easy-to-follow insights on this wise and intriguing book of the Bible. Please promise yourself that you will deepen your faith by deepening your knowledge of the Bible this fall. Come join us on Sunday mornings! You'll be glad you did.
